Titan a new supercomputer claimed the title of the world’s most powerful supercomputer. The Titan supercomputer is 10 times more powerful than the lab’s last Jaguar supercomputer, which was the most powerful supercomputer back in 2009.

The new Titan is built by Cray at the US government’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, measuring at 17.59 petaflops or 17.59 thousand trillion calculations per second, beating the previous record of 16.32 petaflops, held by Sequoia, a supercomputer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, which simulates nuclear attacks.

According to reports Titan also beat the K supercomputer in Japan earlier this year. The new supercomputer Titan has 19,000 processing nodes, 710 terabytes of memory,16-core AMD CPU, Nvidia GPU accelerator a specially-adapted version of processor technology originally developed for the video gaming market.

The new Titan had increasing dependency on GPU incorporation because it consume less power for more processing power compared to CPUs. Their “parallel” architecture also allows them to perform many calculations at once.
