Sony says it will start selling a head mounted display, the HMZ -T1 that provides a 3-D theater of music videos, movies and games, targeting people who prefer solitary entertainment rather than sitting in front of a TV with family or friends.

It looked like something from a Si-Fi movie when it was first showcased at CES 2011, and the final product is not much different from the prototype. Two 1280×720  0.7-inch OLED panels mounted in front of each eye give the wearer an experience similar to viewing a 750-inch screen from 20m.The visuals are crisp and integrated headphones provide a 5.1 surround sound.

Sony is not expecting any wonders with the sales. It seems unlikely that most people or even technology enthusiasts  will want to buy a product that involves sitting alone and wearing a little helmet. The HMZ might not be Sony’s long awaited answer to Apple’s iPod or iPad but just another quirky device packed with cutting-edge technology that is headed for a limited niche following, but this is a good platform for future technologies.

It will initially be launched in Japan for 60,000 yen($783 approx).
