AMD has just begun to roll out their latest Southern Islands GPU, the HD 7970 and we already have news about their forthcoming project, codenamed ‘Sea Islands’. This news comes from ex-employee of AMD, Alexander Shternshain. He was an MTS Design Engineer at AMD who worked on previous GPUs like Evergreen, Northern Islands, Fusion APUs as well as Southern Islands and the upcoming Sea Islands.

Sea Islands directly refers to the chain of islands on the USA’s Atlantic coast. We can thus expect the individual chips from the family codenamed along the lines of the prominent islands in the region. The new chip will most likely be built using the 28nm fabrication process and on their new GCN architecture.

We should expect early prototypes to start showing up around October, this year, followed by an official announcement in either November or December.
