NTT Docomo has been involved in an experimental research in the field of population statistics. The data is collected from The Docomo mobile network which is Japan’s largest carrier. According to the data collected , it is now possible to know the number of of mobile phones and estimate the geographic distribution of  population. This method called mobile spatial statistics can be used to know population distribution, gender, age and movement of people between locations.

This research by Docomo is being done in collaboration with a few Japanese Universities, which showed them how to effectively use the collected data. This technology has the potential to be a great asset, especially during a calamity, because it can show how difficult it can be for people to move from a particular area during a disaster. NTT Docomo has established strict ground rules for this research which ensures privacy while collecting the data.
