In a sudden twist of events, it turns out that Google is the one who bought solar-powered drone maker Titan Aerospace and not Facebook. Google acquired Titan Aerospace with an aim to give internet access to far-flung corners of the world.
Facebook had shown interest in acquiring the same company, but it looks like Google had the same plans too. The company was bought for an undisclosed fee.
A Google spokesman said:
“It’s still early days, but atmospheric satellites could help bring internet access to millions of people, and help solve other problems, including disaster relief and environmental damage like deforestation. It’s why we’re so excited to welcome Titan Aerospace to the Google family.”
The solar-powered drones can fly for five years without needing to land and are capable of traveling 4 million kilometers running on its solar power supply. The company would start by building 11,000 of these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), specifically the “Solara 60″ model.
