Scientists in Stanford are working on brain-implantable sensors that measure the signals of individual neurons and also understand them to actuate certain devices. Devices like cursors of a computer etc. This research is done on the basis that, usually for a paralyzed or a person with some sort of neurological injury, the path way between the brain and muscles is severed but the region of origin of the signals remain intact.

This field is known as neural prosthetics. Professor Krishna Shenoy of electrical engineering, bioengineering and neurobiology at Stanford is in collaboration with a team led by Vikash Gilja and bioengineering doctoral candidate Paul Nuyujukian have developed an algorithm called ReFIT which will increase the speed and accuracy of neural prosthetics vastly.
