Rehtaeh Parsons, 17, committed suicide after four boys allegedly sexually assaulted her and then distributed photos of the assault. She was taken off life support and died in hospital on Sunday in the port city of Halifax in easternmost Canada. Her mother, Leah, says her daughter was bullied mercilessly after the sexual assault on her in 2011.
As per Leah, her daughter got drunk at a party in 2011 and was gang raped by four boys. These boys clicked a picture of the scene and put it online. Her family moved towns to get away from the abuse, but the harassment didn’t stop.
“She was never left alone. Her friends turned against her, people harassed her, boys she didn’t know started texting her and Facebooking asking her to have sex with them since she had had sex with their friends. It just never stopped,” her mother Leah Parsons told public broadcaster CBC.
The police didn’t find enough evidence to charge the boys.
As per a report by Canada’s National Post, hacktivist group Anonymous released a statement saying they had identified two of the alleged rapists and were working to confirm he identifies of the other two. They have also demanded police take “immediate legal action” against them.
“We do not approve of vigilante justice as the media claims,” the group said. “That would mean we approve of violent actions against these rapists at the hands of an unruly mob. What we want is justice. And that’s your job. So do it.”
The statement said,
“Our demands are simple: We want the [Nova Scotia Royal Canadian Mounted Police] to take immediate legal action against the individuals in question. We encourage you to act fast. If we were able to locate these boys within 2 hours, it will not be long before someone else finds them,”
